Five Sentence Fiction – Harvest

By: Jeff Tsuruoka

Barren

The bands were no longer playing and the crowd that attended the commemoration ceremony had long since gone home.

Two generals, former adversaries, stood together in the rain.

Each was lost in his own thoughts as they surveyed the field they’d fought over, now covered with row upon row of gleaming white headstones.

“We reap what we sow, General,” said one to the other.

“Then you and I are both damned.”

FSF – Harvest

By: Amanda S. Moores

As she sat in the soft grass staring at the heart-shaped grave stone, she remembered: the sudden realization, her choked scream, the screeching metal, the blood…so much blood, the high-pitched sirens, the frantic doctors. She remembered her tearful, frenzied attempts to reach the small hand hanging over the edge of the stretcher as the nurses pulled her out of the room. She remembered the flat-line…and the slumped, shaking shoulders of doctors fighting back their own tears. She remembered pieces of the conversation that followed: “…so sorry…loss…difficult decision…time…essence…need to harvest…forms…organ donation…” As she sat in the soft grass staring at the heart-shaped grave stone, she remembered: his first steps, his first words, his first tooth, and she desperately hoped that somewhere someone else’s child would survive to experience those same firsts because of him.

Forbidden Love Blog Hop!!

Here’s my take on the theme:

Each echoing footfall of his unwavering departure hammered the rusty nail of despair deeper into her heart. She knew it was over, that was the way it had to be, but her soul still wept for the love she’d lost. A real, aching, shattering, beautiful, perfect love.

The day they had met, the sun glimmered bright and fierce overhead as she crouched down, fingers splayed in the sand, sifting for seashells. When a shadow fell over her searching hands, she squinted up at the source.

“Find something?” the sun blocker had asked.

Intrigued by his husky voice she stood, dusting sand from her hands. Their eyes met and her heart clenched at the silent promise in his liquid amber eyes.

“No, searching for something.”

He nodded. “I was too, but I think I’ve found it.”

A conspiratorial grin lifted the corner of her mouth. “You know, I think perhaps I have, too.”

It had been an otherworldly experience she would’ve once scoffed at, never having been a romantic. He’d taken her hand and led her down the beach while they talked about everything and nothing at all.

It wasn’t until this morning, four months later, that she found out it was all a lie. No fairytale endings. No happily ever after. His single omission ripped the earth from below her feet.

He was married. His wife was in a coma…had been for the past three years. He’d thought he could start a new life with Emma when the doctor said his wife would forever be in a vegetative state and the plug would soon be pulled. But, this morning his wife opened her eyes.

With a single flutter of lashes, a woman Emma had never met got her life back the same moment Emma’s was lost.

I am so excited to team up with lovely Lady Bullish and fantastic Janelleto host a blog hop of forbidden love. Think Romeo and Juliet, but with your own twist and ending. End the story however you like! If happily ever after is where your heart takes you, go for it!!
Find and post inspiration at our Forbidden Love Blog Hop pinterst board! If you need an invite, just let one of us know and we’ll be glad to set you up!!
