Lost – FSF

When the realization hit that it was gone his heart began a rapid, terrified thrumming as if preparing for take-off. It was there just a moment ago, it had been right there in front of him waiting to be picked up and carried to her. Frantically, clutched by a firm claw of fear, he searched the ground nearby, breathing with labored effort as he looked for his lost prize.

“Okay, okay, calm down,” she said in a soothing voice.

His head snapped up to see his furry, yellow, well gnawed tennis ball gripped firmly in her hand and in a blink his tail wagged happy again, all terror forgotten.

I just love this. I used to own a golden retriever that loved his tennis balls until they were ratty and had yellow plumes like sunspots sticking out of ’em too. This made me think of him. I loved that dog!!

Lol! I was gripped too! I wonder if my dog feels that way when we play catch. Talk about frantic.

    • June 8, 2012 at 6:52 AM

Yes, catch is very serious business 🙂 Thanks you for stopping by!!

  3. June 8, 2012 at 2:29 AM

Very well done. And no doubt this is exactly how it works in most dogs minds!!! 🙂

  4. June 8, 2012 at 3:25 AM

So fun! You build up the tension so well…I’m picturing some guy in an airplane/life-threatening situation and then, whammy. Loved it. (Love dogs!)

  5. June 8, 2012 at 3:58 AM

Love that so much, though I think my dog doesn’t care when the ball goes missing…she just thinks things disappear into a parallel universe and it doesn’t worry her!

    • June 8, 2012 at 6:55 AM

You know, I have one dog who couldn’t possibly care less about the ball, but to my other dog fetch, the ball, and treats are all that matter. It’s all very serious 🙂

  6. June 8, 2012 at 6:04 AM

Awwwwww… I absolutely melted, Lillie. What a sweet story.

  7. June 8, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Oh excellent! For a minute here I thought it was a bridegroom mislaying the ring. And it was an equally important issue to the dog. My collie used to go frantic when his ball was missing – you couldn’t divert his attention from searching for is. Nice one Lillie, thanks for a reminder of the joy that is dogs. Just got to convince my husband now …

    • June 11, 2012 at 2:52 AM

Oh, I’d be lost without my dogs! Thank you for the comment 🙂

This made me think of a childrens’ book in free verse I recently read called, LOVE THAT DOG by Sharon Creech. Thanks for sharing!

    • June 11, 2012 at 3:04 AM

Oh, I’ll have to check that book out! Thanks for sharing and commenting!!

  9. June 8, 2012 at 6:47 PM

I think you’ve captured the dog’s emotions perfectly… I imagine this is exactly how they feel when a ball or other favourite toy goes missing! It’s a serious business in doggy-world! A sweet tale!

    • June 13, 2012 at 7:41 AM

Thank you Michelle and it really truly is the most serious business 😀

  10. June 8, 2012 at 8:57 PM

    Aww..this made me smile….poor dog! lol…glad he found his ball…. 🙂

  11. June 9, 2012 at 12:51 AM

So charming, fun and wonderful! Loved it, Lillie.

    • June 11, 2012 at 3:07 AM

Thank you! My King Charles truly acts like this when he loses a ball…it’s an earth stopping tradgedy to him 🙂

What a sunny post. I could just feel his happiness–evidenced by his relieved and hearty tail-wagging, and then another chase!

    • June 11, 2012 at 3:08 AM

Why thank you, Britton!!! Thank you for stopping by 🙂

Haaha, I pictured your character as a person in the first two lines! Lovely story 🙂

    • June 11, 2012 at 3:10 AM

That’s what I was going for, so I’m glad to know it was successful! Thank you for the comment!!!

  14. June 11, 2012 at 3:45 AM

How adorable!! I too thought it was a person, but was laughing out loud when I realized it was a puppy! Very creative, Lillie!

lovely twist. Are you a dog owner? Thanks for playing at your own game too!

    • June 12, 2012 at 5:14 AM

Thank you 🙂 And, oh yes I have two dogs. A boston terrier and a king charles spaniel. Love them bunches!!!

  16. June 12, 2012 at 3:11 AM

Not a doggy person (cats rule) but this was extremely cute at the end; the blind panic a dog goes through when its prize/toy is out of sight does make me laugh though. xxx

    • June 12, 2012 at 5:15 AM

Cats are super cool, too 🙂 (but, dogs rule) Thanks for stopping by!!!

Your first three sentences could have gone in many different directions, so I was surprised to learn it was written from woof-woof’s POV. Clever and delightful choice.

Sounds like my daughter’s dog. I enjoyed reading this 🙂

    • June 18, 2012 at 3:37 AM

Aren’t dogs just the best 🙂 Thank you for stopping by!!!

  21. June 13, 2012 at 11:45 AM

I loved this!! I laughed out loud because my little dog absolutely freaks when he can’t find his throw toy!! Totally fun read!! 🙂

    • June 18, 2012 at 3:38 AM

Oh, my dog Georgia made writing this so easy. He truly loses his cool when a ball is missing. Thank you for the super comment 😀

  22. June 15, 2012 at 8:42 AM

This is wonderful Lillie! You’ve captured the dog’s love for the game so well. You took me back to days when our Springer Spaniels chased tennis balls. Now I have a Lhasa Apso who half-heartedly chases his rawhide chew and never brings it back… I miss the game!

    • June 18, 2012 at 3:39 AM

Why thank you! A friend of mine has Springer Spaniels and I adore those dogs. It always amazes me to get to know dogs and see a new and distinct personality in all of them 🙂
